Unlocking the magic of child lead play
Playing with your child is about nurturing their growth and learning. Letting them take the lead during playtime can ignite their imagination and enhance their development in incredible ways.
Here’s why it’s wonderful to let your child lead the way during their early childhood years!
Benefits of child lead play
When children are empowered to choose the games and activities they enjoy, they become enthusiastic learners, soaking up knowledge like sponges and feeling empowered as the bosses of their little worlds, boosting their confidence and making them feel special.
Child-directed play is an enriching experience for children of all ages and abilities, fostering exploration, learning, and the creation of cherished memories.
What do you need for child lead-play?
Whatever excites your child, whether it’s their favorite toy, a fascinating bug from outside, or even some basic household items like pots and pans – no fancy toys are required!
Infant lead play
Child lead play with your infant begins with intently following their gaze while engaging in their interactive dialogue. Find their item of interest and offering the play object within their reach to stimulate their curiosity.
Toddler lead play
For children under the age of 5, child lead play is all about giving your child the freedom to explore play on their own, while you’re ready to jump in the fun with toys and activities they have chosen.
What is an adult’s role in child lead play!
Simply watch and join in! Keep an eye on what grabs your child’s attention, then ask if you can join the fun. Whether it’s building blocks or chasing butterflies, let them lead the way!
Once you’re playing, follow your child’s lead. If they’re rolling a ball, roll it back. If they switch to building a tower, grab some blocks and build with them!
Keep your conversation flowing during playtime, talk about what you’re doing together. Ask your child questions and cheer them as you go, making the whole experience even more fun!
So, the next time your child grabs a toy or points out something interesting, dive right in and enjoy the adventure together!
At our canopy Early Education child led play is one of the foundations of our curriculum. We take the time to observe children’s interests, engage with them in this, and use it to build on and create intentional teaching experiences.
