Embarking on literacy development: Insights from canopy educators

Apr 29, 2024

At canopy Early Education, we are passionate about nurturing young minds and laying the groundwork for their future success. We understand the importance of literacy development in early childhood, and the pivotal role it plays in shaping a child’s learning journey. From the moment children join the canopy family, we embark on an exciting adventure of exploration and discovery, guiding them through the wondrous world of language.

Literacy development in early childhood is a core aspect of learning at canopy. We are dedicated to developing early literacy skills in all our children, recognising that it’s not just about reading and writing but also about equipping children with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of communication, problem-solving, and social interaction.

Talking and communicating is an important stage of children’s literacy development. By fostering an environment where language is valued and celebrated, we lay the groundwork for strong communication skills that will serve canopy learners well throughout their lives.

Reading together is a cherished ritual in our classrooms, and it’s integral to support the development of children’s reading skills. Whether diving into a beloved storybook or embarking on a literary adventure while visiting our local library, we aim to instill a love for reading that will last a lifetime.

In the early stages of writing development, we help canopy learners through a progression that begins with promoting their fine motor skills. For the younger children, this involves engaging in playful activities like painting and scribbling with brushes, and even utilising utensils during mealtimes. As they advance, we gradually introduce them to tracing letter shapes, eventually guiding them towards joining these letters together. As canopy learners mature, they naturally incorporate letter-like shapes into their drawings, marking their transition into letters, words, and sounds in our Jolly Phonics program.

Rhyming activities also add an extra layer of fun and variety to our literacy curriculum. From funny songs to playful games, we explore the rhythmic patterns of language, helping children develop phonic awareness and an appreciation for the musicality of words. These activities not only enhance children’s literacy skills but also foster creativity and self-expression.

At canopy Early Education, we recognise the importance of literacy development in shaping the future of children. Every interaction is an opportunity to support canopy learners’ growth and learning with pictures, sounds, and words. Our educators are trained to tailor their approach to meet the individual needs of each child, providing a supportive environment where every child can thrive.

By nurturing a love for language and literacy at canopy Early Education, we prepare children for a future filled with endless possibilities. We are dedicated to shaping young minds and sowing the seeds of literacy that will flourish for years.
