A Celebration of Culture and Community

Jul 4, 2025

canopy Dakabin had the honour of receiving an artwork by Florence Ash (Aunty Floss), who is culturally known as Budul Gunyuur – meaning ‘White Spirit Crocodile’. The presentation was made extra special with Aunty Floss in attendance with Uncle Geoffery, Centre Manager Conor, COO Lynne, and CEO Peta.

Aunty Floss, an accomplished Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artist, shared the meaning behind her piece, which beautifully captures the spirit of canopy Early Education. The three trees in her painting represent canopy’s first three centres, their connected tops forming a ‘canopy’ to symbolise unity and support. Elders are represented watching over the centres, while small circles at the base signify the children, nurtured and growing beneath. Wavy lines below show the learning journey shared with educators.

Inspired by her childhood in the rainforests and coastal areas of North Queensland, Aunty Floss blends bright and earthy tones in a contemporary style that connects deeply with Country and culture.

We’re proud to now have this original work displayed at canopy Dakabin with prints welcoming children and families at all our other canopy centres. Thank you, Aunty Floss for sharing your story and vision with us.
